Day 1
Saturday

SHAPE

Join your peers in the shaping bay and get your hands dusty as you learn how to shape your very own personally-tailored Paul Surf shape.

What will be covered:

  • Required tools and safety

  • Setting up an effective and efficient shaping bay

  • Drawing an accurate template

  • Cutting a smooth outline

  • How to use an electric planer and sander, a surform, sanding blocks, screens, and handplanes

  • Rail and contour design

  • Measuring and marking for fins

  • Finishing

  • Taping off for cut laps and preparing for lamination

How this segment of the course will be run:

  • Before you get into the shaping bay, you’ll have the opportunity to hop on a phone call with Paul and discuss the details of the board you’d like to shape; what you’ve been riding, what you hope to achieve with a new shape, your height and weight etc. will be all taken into consideration.

  • Once everyone’s outlines and dimensions have been determined, Paul will prepare the respective boards for the 1st Saturday.

  • All segments of the course will operate in a staggered progression; meaning, one board will still be a raw foam blank, one will have the outline cut, one will be foiled, and so forth. This way, you will be able to see every step of the process and be able to get your hands on your own board.

  • By the end of the day, one shape will be fully complete, and the others will be at various stages along the path to completion. Over the course of the next week, Paul will complete the unfinished shapes and prep for the next Glass segment.

What to bring:

  • 3m dust mask

  • Comfortable, close-toed shoes

  • Pants

  • Long sleeve shirt

  • Safety glasses

  • Notebook / pen
